Refraction through a glass slab
A ray passes through a rectangular glass slab. It bends towards the normal on entering and away on leaving.
What to notice
The emergent ray is parallel to the incident ray but shifted sideways (lateral displacement).
Key relation
n = sin i / sin r, emergent ray ∥ incident ray, d = t sin(i − r) / cos r
Try this
Increase the angle of incidence. Does the lateral shift grow? What happens at i = 0?
What you can change
- Angle of incidence i: 0 to 80 °
- Refractive index of glass: 1.3 to 1.9
- Slab thickness t: 2 to 8 cm
