Reactivity series: displacement reactions
Dip a metal strip into a salt solution. A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from its salt.
What to notice
Zinc in copper sulphate gets a brown copper coating and the blue colour fades; copper in silver nitrate turns the solution blue.
Key relation
K > Na > Ca > Mg > Al > Zn > Fe > Pb > [H] > Cu > Ag > Au
Try this
Put copper in iron sulphate. Then iron in copper sulphate. Explain the difference.
What you can change
- Metal strip: choose Potassium (K), Sodium (Na), Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Aluminium (Al), Zinc (Zn), Iron (Fe), Lead (Pb), …
- Salt solution: choose Copper sulphate (CuSO₄), Iron(II) sulphate (FeSO₄), Zinc sulphate (ZnSO₄), Silver nitrate (AgNO₃), Magnesium sulphate (MgSO₄)
