Pressure from molecular collisions
Molecules strike the walls of a box. Each bounce delivers momentum 2mv_x; together they make pressure.
What to notice
Doubling the number of molecules or the absolute temperature doubles the pressure.
Key relation
P = ⅓ (Nm/V) v_rms² = NkT / V
Try this
Halve the box side. By what factor does the pressure rise?
What you can change
- Number of moles: 0.1 to 5 mol
- Temperature: 100 to 600 K
- Box side: 10 to 50 cm
- Gas: choose Helium, Nitrogen, Carbon dioxide
