Class 11 Botany simulations · Respiration in Plants
Respiratory quotient (RQ)
Respire different substrates in a respirometer and compare the CO₂ released with the O₂ consumed.
What to notice
Carbohydrates give RQ = 1; fats need more oxygen, so RQ < 1; organic acids give RQ > 1.
Key relation
RQ = volume of CO₂ evolved / volume of O₂ consumed
Try this
Which seeds would you expect to show an RQ near 0.7 — wheat or castor (oil-rich)?
What you can change
- Respiratory substrate: choose Carbohydrate (glucose), Fat (tripalmitin), Protein, Organic acid (malic)
