Stomata: guard cells at work
Change the turgor of the guard cells and watch the stomatal pore open and close.
What to notice
The unevenly thickened walls (thick inner wall, thin outer wall) and radially arranged cellulose microfibrils of guard cells make them bow apart when they swell with water.
Key relation
Turgid guard cells → pore opens ; flaccid → pore closes
Try this
Compare the bean-shaped dicot guard cells with the dumb-bell shaped grass guard cells.
What you can change
- Guard cells: choose Bean-shaped (dicot), Dumb-bell shaped (grasses)
- Guard-cell turgor: 0 to 100 %
