Finding oxidation numbers
Pick a compound and see how the oxidation number of the central element is found from the rules.
What to notice
Oxidation numbers can be fractional as averages (Fe₃O₄ gives +8/3); in H₂O₂ oxygen is −1 and in OF₂ it is +2.
Key relation
Sum of oxidation numbers = charge ; H = +1, O = −2 (except peroxides and OF₂), alkali metals = +1, F = −1
Try this
Work out the oxidation number of Cr in K₂Cr₂O₇ before checking.
What you can change
- Compound: 1 to 9
