Redox: zinc in copper sulphate
Dip a metal strip into a solution of another metal’s ions and see whether a displacement (redox) reaction happens.
What to notice
Zinc is oxidised (0 → +2) and copper ions are reduced (+2 → 0); the blue colour of Cu²⁺ fades and copper deposits on zinc.
Key relation
Zn(s) + Cu²⁺(aq) → Zn²⁺(aq) + Cu(s)
Try this
Put a copper strip in zinc sulphate. Does anything happen?
What you can change
- Strip in solution: choose Zinc strip in CuSO₄, Copper strip in ZnSO₄, Copper wire in AgNO₃
- Time: 0 to 60 min
