Acid–base indicators
Test common solutions with litmus, phenolphthalein, methyl orange, turmeric and universal indicator.
What to notice
Acids turn blue litmus red; bases turn red litmus blue and phenolphthalein pink. Universal indicator shows the pH by colour.
Key relation
pH < 7 acidic, pH = 7 neutral, pH > 7 basic
Try this
Find a solution that turns phenolphthalein pink but is only weakly basic.
What you can change
- Solution: choose Dilute hydrochloric acid, Lemon juice, Vinegar, Distilled water, Baking soda solution, Soap solution, Dilute sodium hydroxide
- Indicator: choose Blue litmus paper, Red litmus paper, Phenolphthalein, Methyl orange, Turmeric, Universal indicator
