Basic strength of amines
Compare the pK_b of ammonia, aliphatic amines and aniline in water.
What to notice
Alkyl groups push electrons to N, making aliphatic amines stronger bases than ammonia; in water, solvation makes 2° amines strongest. Aniline is much weaker because its lone pair is delocalised into the ring.
Key relation
pK_b = −log K_b ; smaller pK_b = stronger base
Try this
Why is (CH₃)₃N weaker than (CH₃)₂NH in water?
