Chirality and enantiomers
Compare a chiral molecule with its mirror image and try to superimpose them.
What to notice
Enantiomers cannot be superimposed and rotate plane-polarised light equally in opposite directions, e.g. (+)- and (−)-butan-2-ol (±13.5°).
Key relation
A carbon with four different groups is a stereocentre; its mirror images are enantiomers
Try this
Rotate the right-hand molecule. Can you make it match the left one?
What you can change
- Rotate the mirror image: 0 to 360 °
