Crystal field splitting in octahedral complexes
Set the d-electron count and the splitting Δₒ compared with the pairing energy P to get high- or low-spin complexes.
What to notice
Strong-field ligands (Δₒ > P) give low-spin complexes; weak-field ligands (Δₒ < P) give high-spin complexes.
Key relation
CFSE = (−0.4 n(t₂g) + 0.6 n(e_g)) Δₒ ; absorbed λ (nm) ≈ 10⁷ / Δₒ (cm⁻¹)
Try this
For d⁶, compare Δₒ < P with Δₒ > P. How many unpaired electrons in each?
What you can change
- d electrons: 1 to 10
- Δₒ: 10000 to 35000 cm⁻¹
- Pairing energy P: 10000 to 30000 cm⁻¹
