Molarity and dilution
Dissolve a solute, then add water and see the molarity fall while the moles of solute stay the same.
What to notice
Dilution changes the volume, not the amount of solute, so concentration falls in proportion.
Key relation
M = n / V(L) ; M₁V₁ = M₂V₂
Try this
Make 100 mL of 1 M solution and dilute it to 250 mL. What is the new molarity?
What you can change
- Moles of NaCl: 0.01 to 0.5 mol
- Starting volume: 50 to 250 mL
- Water added: 0 to 500 mL
More in Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry
