Dipole moments of molecules
See how individual bond dipoles add up (or cancel) to give the dipole moment of a molecule.
What to notice
Symmetric molecules such as CO₂, BF₃ and CH₄ have zero dipole moment; NH₃ has a larger dipole than NF₃ because the lone pair adds to the N–H dipoles.
Key relation
μ = q × d (debye, D) ; molecular μ = vector sum of bond dipoles
Try this
Why is the dipole of NF₃ so small?
