Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov addition
Add HBr to propene with or without peroxide and see where the bromine ends up.
What to notice
Without peroxide H adds to the carbon that already has more H atoms (via the more stable 2° carbocation); peroxide reverses this by a free-radical path (Kharasch effect).
Key relation
CH₃–CH=CH₂ + HBr → CH₃–CHBr–CH₃ (Markovnikov) ; with peroxide → CH₃–CH₂–CH₂Br
Try this
Switch on peroxide. Which product forms now?
What you can change
- Conditions: choose HBr alone, HBr + peroxide
- Progress: 0 to 100 %
