Magnetic dipole: axis and equator
Move away from a small bar magnet and compare its axial and equatorial fields.
What to notice
At equal distances, the axial field magnitude is twice the equatorial field.
Key relation
Baxis = 2μ₀m/(4πr³); Beq = μ₀m/(4πr³)
Try this
Double the distance and watch both fields fall by a factor of eight.
What you can change
- Magnetic moment: 0.5 to 10 A·m²
- Distance from centre: 0.2 to 2 m
