Heating gas at constant pressure
Weights hold the piston pressure fixed while you heat the gas. Track Q, W and ΔU.
What to notice
Only part of the heat raises internal energy; the rest does work lifting the piston.
Key relation
W = nRΔT, Q = nC_pΔT, ΔU = nC_vΔT
Try this
Switch to a diatomic gas. What fraction of Q becomes work now?
What you can change
- Amount of gas: 0.1 to 2 mol
- Pressure: 50 to 300 kPa
- Initial temperature: 250 to 400 K
- Final temperature: 300 to 800 K
- Gas: choose Monatomic (Cv = 3R/2), Diatomic (Cv = 5R/2)
