LR circuit: phasors and phase lag
Drive a resistor and inductor with AC. The current lags the voltage by the phase angle φ.
What to notice
At higher frequency the inductor’s reactance grows, the current falls and lags further.
Key relation
Z = √(R² + X_L²), X_L = 2πfL, tan φ = X_L / R
Try this
Raise the frequency until φ reaches 45°. What is X_L then?
What you can change
- Supply voltage (rms): 1 to 240 V
- Frequency: 10 to 1000 Hz
- Inductance: 1 to 500 mH
- Resistance: 1 to 200 Ω
