Parallax: view from the right angle
Move the viewing direction and see why a raised pointer must be read straight on.
What to notice
The reading becomes accurate when the eye is directly above the pointer. Raising the pointer increases parallax.
Key relation
Apparent shift = h tan θ
Try this
Use equal positive and negative viewing angles. Compare the signs of the error.
What you can change
- True pointer position: 3 to 7 cm
- Pointer above scale: 0.2 to 1.5 cm
- Viewing angle from normal: -45 to 45 °
