Six particles chasing on a hexagon (HC Verma)
Six particles at the corners of a regular hexagon of side a each move at constant speed v toward the particle at the next corner. Find the time they take to meet. Source: Concept of Physics, H. C. Verma.
What to notice
In a regular hexagon R = a, and the speed toward the centre is v/2, so the particles meet after T = a ÷ (v/2) = 2a/v.
Key relation
T = 2a / v (speed toward the centre = v sin 30° = v/2)
Try this
Set a = 4 m and v = 2 m/s. Check T = 2a/v = 4 s, then double v.
What you can change
- Side a: 1 to 10 m
- Speed v: 0.5 to 5 m/s
