Colligative properties: boiling and freezing point
Dissolve a solute in 1 kg of water and see the boiling point rise and the freezing point fall.
What to notice
The change depends on the number of solute particles, not on their kind — NaCl gives about twice the effect of glucose.
Key relation
ΔT_b = i K_b m ; ΔT_f = i K_f m ; water: K_b = 0.52, K_f = 1.86 K kg mol⁻¹
Try this
Dissolve 0.5 mol of NaCl and of glucose. Compare the freezing points.
What you can change
- Solute: choose Glucose, Urea, Sodium chloride, Calcium chloride
- Molality: 0 to 2 mol/kg
More in Solutions
- Henry’s law: gas dissolved in a liquid
- Osmosis and osmotic pressure
- Raoult’s law: vapour pressure of a mixture
