Class 12 Chemistry simulations · Solutions
Osmosis and osmotic pressure
Separate a solution from pure water by a semipermeable membrane and find the pressure that stops osmosis.
What to notice
Water flows into the more concentrated side; applying more than π reverses the flow (reverse osmosis, used to purify water).
Key relation
π = i C R T ; R = 0.0821 L atm mol⁻¹ K⁻¹
Try this
Find π for 0.1 M glucose at 300 K. Then apply a larger pressure.
What you can change
- Concentration: 0.01 to 0.5 mol/L
- van ’t Hoff factor i: 1 to 3
- Temperature: 273 to 350 K
- Applied pressure: 0 to 30 atm
More in Solutions
- Colligative properties: boiling and freezing point
- Henry’s law: gas dissolved in a liquid
- Raoult’s law: vapour pressure of a mixture
