Eddy-current braking
Rotate a conducting disc through a magnetic brake and follow the loss of rotational energy.
What to notice
Induced currents oppose the motion that produces them. Rotational energy becomes heat without mechanical contact.
Key relation
τbrake = −bω; ω = ω₀e^(−bt/I)
Try this
Compare a weak and a strong magnetic brake.
What you can change
- Disc moment of inertia: 0.2 to 2 kg·m²
- Initial angular speed: 1 to 8 rad/s
- Magnetic braking coefficient: 0.1 to 1 N·m·s
