Prism: angle of minimum deviation
Change the angle of incidence on a glass prism and measure the angle of emergence and the deviation.
What to notice
As i increases, δ first decreases and then increases. At the minimum, i = e and the ray inside is parallel to the base.
Key relation
δ = i + e − A, n = sin[(A + δₘ)/2] / sin(A/2)
Try this
Find the angle of incidence that gives the smallest deviation. Is i = e there?
What you can change
- Angle of incidence i: 25 to 80 °
- Angle of prism A: 45 to 65 °
- Refractive index of glass: 1.4 to 1.7
